Resistant enterococci isolated from raw sheep’s milk and cheeses from South region of Brazil

ABSTRACT: Enterococci have been used as sentinel organisms for monitoring antimicrobial resistance in food, humans, and other animals. In this sense, the present study evaluated susceptibility profile presence of genes associated with to erythromycin (msrC ermB) tetracycline [tet(M) and/or tet(L)] enterococci isolated from raw sheep’s milk cheeses (colonial, feta-, pecorino-type) South region Brazil. A total 156 were (n=80) cheese (n=76) samples, identified by MALDI-TOF. Enterococcus faecalis (50.6%; n=79) was most frequent species both samples. According vitro tests, strains not susceptible commonly agents human veterinary medicine. The frequency MDR (53.7%) higher than those (24.2%). tet(M) gene detected among not-susceptible strains. provided first evidence Drug-resistant strains, particularly that are MDR, constitute a One Health issue.
